Do you have to pay old HOA fees when you foreclose on a house?

A friend of mine lost their house and she showed me a letter yesterday from a lawyer to collect back dated HOA fees. She said she is not going to pay it, but it looks pretty serious. Does anyone know the legal ramifications if she doesn't pay them. They are asking for 690 + 300 in lawyer fees. Do you think she could settle for a smaller amount?
